Our school district is located in south-central Ohio near the Ohio River.  We are one of nine Scioto County school districts. The nine county schools are:  Clay, Glenwood, Green, Minford, Northwest, Portsmouth West, South Webster, Valley, and Wheelersburg.

There are 3 additional schools in Scioto County located within the city of Portsmouth:  Portsmouth City, Sciotoville Community School, and Notre Dame.  Portsmouth City Schools and Sciotoville Community School are governed by different boards of education.  Notre Dame is a private school governed by its own board of education.

Our school district was organized in 1923.  The original name of our district was the Minford Rural District.

Mr. Jeremy Litteral is the Superintendent of the Minford Local School District.

Our district is divided into three buildings:  High School (Grades 9 - 12), Middle School (Grades 4 - 8) and the Elementary School (Grades K - 3).

*Our current school mascot is the falcon.
**Our current school colors are red and white.

Our Mascot History

In the 1936 - 1937 school year, a contest was held to name a mascot for our district.
The winning name was the Minford Cardinals.

The Portsmouth Times, December 30, 1936, p. 11:
NICKNAMED CARDINALS - Minford Teams To Be Known By That Title In Future
Paul Garrett won the contest to select a nickname for the athletic teams of Minford High School.  He submitted the name of "Cardinals" and received a season ticket to the basketball games.  Coach Ed Duncan made the selection.

Sometime between 1936 and 1944, our school was dubbed The Minford Maroons in local newspapers.  We remained the Maroons until 1944 when our mascot was officially changed to a falcon.

How We Became The Mighty Minford Falcons

In 1949 Mr. Bob Bowen graduated from Minford High School.  After serving in the US Air Force, he graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in Radio and Television.  In 1958, he became a Radio Announcer, then Sports Director, at the WSAZ-TV station in Huntington, West Virginia.  When announcing the local sports scores, Mr. Bowen always referred to Minford as "The Mighty Minford Falcons."  Click here for more information about Mr. Bowen.
